Obituary - Dr Edwin Poon



DR. Edwin Poon (潘醒華醫生) (1970-2014)

A funeral service has been held on 22 Jan 2014 (Wed) at 紅磡 萬國殯儀館 2 樓 福海堂.

Dr Edwin Poon, passed away on 10th January, 2014.

Dr Poon was a graduate in the University College in London with a Science and Medical Degree in 1994, and furthered his training in the UK as a doctor. Dr Poon began to work in the Department of Medicine of Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital (PYNEH) in 2001, when he began to undergo respiratory specialist training under Dr Loretta Yam. He had special interests in Smoking Cessation, Allergy and Immunotherapy, Lung Cancer screening and Sleep disordered breathing. His work in PYNEH encompassed the most stressful SARS period, during those times Dr Poon had contributed significantly as a brave warrior in this battle we won.

Dr Poon has published in many international Medical Journals. He had advised the Hospital Authority’s Working Group on Doctors’ hours, Central Training Advisory Committee, the Hong Kong East Smoking Cessation and Counselling Centre, the Hong Kong Amateur Swimming Association and numerous Private Hospital advisory committees. Dr Poon was awarded the Hong Kong Lung Foundation Fellowship 2001 – 2002 to undergo Training in Immunotherapy for asthma and allergy at Guy's King's and St. Thomas' School of Medicine, United Kingdom

Dr Poon will always be remembered as a dedicated doctor and a nice gentleman. He displayed a courteous composure even under periods of stress. As he aged, this mellowness only increased.

Dr Poon moved to private practice after 2003. Besides earning significant success, he continued to be commended as a good doctor, colleague, friend, and beloved father. Dr Poon is survived by his wife and three children.
