10 Years after SAR: A new workgroup in HKTS/ACCP

To commemorate the SARS battle the respiratory professionals fought for ten years ago, HKTS and ACCP (Hong Kong and Macau Chapter) have taken the lead in organizing a series of functions which aims at giving a vision on the different aspects SARS had influenced upon.

A core working group has been formed to explore and plan for the activities.
Members include: Dr Wilson Yee (Chairman), Dr CK Ng (Secretary), Dr Maureen Wong, Dr Alan Kwok, Dr Angus Lo, Dr YC Yeung, Ms Kristy Chan (representative of HK Respiratory Nursing College)

Objectives
  • To give credit to the efforts paid by Respiratory professionals in defending our community against SARS in 2003, in particular frontline colleagues who deceased in the battle.
  • To hand the ‘torch’ to our junior fellows who were not involved in the battle by giving them a comprehensive overview of the outbreak.
  • To facilitate health education and publication on the importance of proper management of pneumonia.
  • To promote and consolidate the image of HKTS/ACCP as a medical professional body that provides public education in prevention, treatment of respiratory disease and related problems in the hope of ameliorating the burden on society in case of future epidemic outbreaks.

The first SARS Commemoration Event in the series should be a press conference announcement of this series of activities:

Themes/Activities/Aims:
  • Sharing of experiences by respiratory health care professionals throughout the ten years since SARS.
  • Public Alert --- Threat of Pneumonia. To raise public awareness for the newly emerging respiratory infections, such as the novel coronavirus.
  • To reiterate and highlight the vitality of infection control measures which may have slackened with time.

SARS 10th Years Commemoration Book
A book on SARS will be published and includes:
  • Articles/Essays from respiratory doctors and nurses, some of whom recovered as SARS patients themselves and others participated actively in fighting against SARS
  • Selected winner articles from Tse YM scholarship
  • Introduction of HKTS/ACCP/HKLF

Objectives of the book:
  • To highlight the efforts made by the medical professionals, especially the Respiratory Professionals, in protecting our community from SARS a decade ago
  • To catch up how people involved have lived the previous 10 years under the influence of SARS, and share with the public the impacts of SARS on their lives and personal values
