2016 - Emeritus Professor Wah-Kit Lam

Professor Wah-Kit Lam, the founding Chairman & Honorary Fellow of Hong Kong Lung Foundation, was conferred Emeritus professor by the University of Hong Kong in March 2016

Professor Lam graduated from the University of Hong Kong. He pioneered research in lung cancer with focus on non-smoking Chinese women in Hong Kong. He has built up vast international reputation on research in lung cancer and respiratory medicine. He helped to assemble a team of clinical and research staff with a comprehensive range of molecular, microarray, bio-cellular and clinical research and upfront diagnostic facilities. For undergraduate education, he planned and implemented the new Problem-Based-Learning MBBS Curriculum in internal medicine in HKU when he was Deputy Head and Head of Department of Medicine (1990s – 2004). He has not stopped teaching after retirement and is still teaching medical students in HKU. For postgraduate training and assessment, as founding chairman of Specialty Board in Respiratory Medicine and Vice-President of the Hong Kong College of Physicians (HKCP), he formulated guidelines and laid the foundation for postgraduate training and exit assessment in respiratory medicine in Hong Kong. He played a key role in the implementation of the joint HKCP Intermediate Examination/MRCP (UK) Examination in Hong Kong, including introduction of the new PACES Examination in Hong Kong. He was conferred Honorary Fellow of HKCP in 2011.

Professor Lam has also built up the invaluable link with mainland and overseas sister colleges of physicians. He has represented Hong Kong in the Asia-Pacific Committee of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP), and was appointed as International Advisors for Hong Kong for the Royal Colleges of Physicians of London, Edinburgh and Glasgow. He was the founding Chairman of the Hong Kong Lung Foundation (HKLF) (1996) and the President of the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology (2002 – 2004). He was also instrumental to the formation of the Hong Kong Thoracic Society and also served as President, Governor and Regent of the then American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) (Hong Kong and Macau Chapter). He was conferred the Manuel Albertal Award

(ACCP), Honorary Fellow (Fellow Honaris Causa) of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and Honorary Fellow of the HKLF in 2002, 2008 and 2009 respectively.

Professor Lam was our first Chair Professor in Respiratory Medicine (1997), and first Endowed Professor in Respiratory Medicine (明德教授) (2007). He is now Emeritus Professor, HKU. (香港大學榮休教授). Congratulations and best wishes to Professor WK Lam.
